Supporting the full promise of healthcare price transparency

Today I'm sitting down with Patient Rights Advocate and peers from across health tech, provider organizations and HHS for a roundtable on machine-readable files, the pricing data mandated under the Transparency in Coverage rule.

We’re here to support the CMS to deliver on the full promise of the Transparency in Coverage rule, Hospital Price Transparency and prescription drug machine-readable files. Just a few years ago, much of this data simply wasn't available. Today, we have the foundation for a more transparent healthcare system.

While I can’t overstate the rule’s impact on showing employers and members the true cost of care, there's more work to be done in making sure it’s able to be used to the highest fidelity.

At Handl Health, we keep pushing for three things:

✅ More consistent schemas and definitions so contractual and claims-level nuances are represented clearly, rather than requiring every organization to develop its own interpretation.

✅ Better network identification across payers, providers and employers so we can better integrate published MRFs.

✅ An accurate national provider directory that makes it easier to connect a provider’s network status and locations of work to a specific carrier product.

The industry has made real progress toward a future of transparent healthcare costs. Our focus is now continuing that momentum on behalf of employers and members because they will be impacted the most by these improvements. They bear much of the cost of healthcare and should have straightforward, unrestricted access to the data needed to make informed decisions.
